SPEC: COMMUNITY YOUTH RESOURCE SPECIALIST CALIFORNIA STATE PERSONNEL BOARD SPECIFICATION Schematic Code: PB70 Class Code: 9586 Established: 12/6/94 Revised: -- Title Changed: -- COMMUNITY YOUTH RESOURCE SPECIALIST DEFINITION Under direction, the Community Youth Resource Specialist will target specific urban areas and work with gang members, schools, parent groups, law enforcement, and community businesses to provide at-risk youth with alternatives to gang membership; and to do other related work. TYPICAL TASKS The Community Youth Resource Specialist acts as a role model and conducts periodic meetings, makes community presentations, promotes mediation, and interacts with the gang subculture in order to provide counseling for, intervention to, and prevention of gang activity. The specialist prepares written reports of project activities and makes recommendations to the Gang Violence Reduction Project. The specialist represents and supports policies and procedures as established by the Gang Violence Reduction Project and the Department of the Youth Authority. The Community Youth Resource Specialist works with at-risk youth and adult gang members, schools, parent groups, and the community to provide gang members with positive alternatives to gang activities. The specialist provides mediation between rival gangs. The specialist's role is not limited to advising at-risk youth or gang members, but includes the community as a whole. Incumbents may perform lead responsibility. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Must be a resident of the target area, and a parent or family member of an at-risk youth, and have six months' experience providing direction to at-risk youth. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: The gang subculture and the effects of gang activity on the community. Ability to: Effectively communicate with diverse groups of people in a variety of unique situations and be able to coordinate special activities and events.
