SPEC: GROUP SUPERVISOR TRAINEE CALIFORNIA STATE PERSONNEL BOARD SPECIFICATION Schematic Code: WU91 Class Code: 9578 Established: 9/18/74 Revised: -- Title Changed: -- GROUP SUPERVISOR TRAINEE DEFINITION Under supervision, in a trainee capacity, to supervise the conduct of youths in a Department of the Youth Authority program; and to do other related work. JOB CHARACTERISTICS Persons in the class of Group Supervisor Trainee perform work assignments similar in type to those of a Group Supervisor, with the exception of those duties which require peace officer status. Employees in this class will undergo a comprehensive training program which is designed to prepare them for work as a Group Supervisor. TYPICAL TASKS Supervises a group of youths in a correctional program during work assignments and recreational activities; instructs them in personal grooming and accepted social customs and behavior; explains purpose of the program and reasons for any disciplinary action; maintains order, cleanliness, and safety in the living unit where assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Eighteen months of experience. (College training may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.) ABILITIES Ability to: Read and write; follow oral and written directions; work with and inspire the confidence and cooperation of wards and staff. SPECIAL PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Emotional maturity and stability; demonstrated leadership ability; sympathetic and objective understanding of the problems of youths in custody; tact; patience; high standards of morals and speech; neat personal appearance; keenness of observation; willingness to work in a corrective facility; continuing satisfactory record as a law abiding citizen; visual acuity of not less than 20/70 in each eye without correction and corrected to not less than 20/20 in one eye and 20/30 in the other, provided the defective vision is not due to active or progressive organic disease; and normal hearing.
