SPEC: PRE-LICENSED PHARMACIST CALIFORNIA STATE PERSONNEL BOARD SPECIFICATION Schematic Code: SY70 Class Code: 9313 Established: 5/20/93 Revised: -- Title Changed: -- PRE-LICENSED PHARMACIST DEFINITION Under direct supervision of a licensed Pharmacist, in a State facility, performs activities pertaining to the practice of professional pharmaceutical work; and does other related work. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The classification of Pre-licensed Pharmacist is a temporary classification in the Pharmacist series. Incumbents must have graduated from an accredited four-year university or college with a degree in Pharmacy and be registered to take the Pharmacist licensure examination. All positions in this class are established for a period not to exceed nine months and all appointments are made on a temporary basis. Incumbents will be required to have a valid certificate of registration as a licentiate in Pharmacy issued by the California State Board of Pharmacy within this nine-month period of time. TYPICAL TASKS Under the direction and review of a licensed Pharmacist, prepares and dispenses drugs and pharmaceutical preparations; fills prescriptions; reviews patients' charts and medication regimens; participates in treatment team meetings; provides ongoing consultation to the treatment teams and to the Medical Review Committee; maintains unit dose system; keeps records of drugs, poisons, and narcotics as required by Federal and State laws; properly handles investigational drugs; assists in the preparation of estimates and requisitions for the drugs, sundries and chemicals required, and keeps records of those received, on hand and dispensed; and performs other related work. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Graduation from an accredited university or college with a baccalaureate degree in a course of study devoted to the practice of Pharmacy; registration as an intern with the California State Board of Pharmacy; and application as a candidate with the California State Board of Pharmacy to take the Pharmacist licensure examination. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: Compounding of prescriptions and stock pharmaceutical preparations; drugs, chemicals, and pharmaceutical supplies required in the operation of a Pharmacy; laws pertaining to dispensing and use of narcotics and poisons. Ability to: Compound prescriptions and stock pharmaceutical preparations; keep records and prepare reports; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; assimilate and provide information on drugs and their actions.
