SPEC: SELF-HELP SPONSOR (PART-TIME) CALIFORNIA STATE PERSONNEL BOARD SPECIFICATION Schematic Code: TR15 Class Code: 8434 Established: 10/20/77 Revised: 4/13/78 Title Changed: -- SELF-HELP SPONSOR (PART-TIME) DEFINITION Under the general direction of the Warden or Superintendent (in addition to regular duties) to act as a sponsor of inmates who voluntarily participate, on their own time, in socially acceptable groups activities within the institutional system; to supervise, assist, and guide inmates while sponsoring such inmate group activities; and to promote acceptable attitudes and behavior of inmates supervised; and to do other related work. JOB CHARACTERISTICS In addition to regular employment within a State correctional institution, a Self-Help Sponsor performs the necessary supervising tasks associated with volunteer inmate group activities. A Self-Help Sponsor does not have peace officer status. TYPICAL TASKS Acts as a sponsor to a specific inmate group activity as defined by the Warden or Superintendent within the institutional grounds such as indoor and outdoor games and sports, dramatics, lectures, entertainment, and special interest clubs; supervises such activity in a designated area; takes complete charge of and is responsible for all activities within the designated area and for the time period allotted to such activity; secures space, equipment, materials and other items necessary to carry out the functions of the activity; takes periodic counts of inmates when required; secures all activity areas when not in use; promotes acceptable attitudes and behavior of inmates supervised. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Employment in a State correctional institution. KNOWLEDGES AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: Organization and functions of the institution; rules, guidelines and procedures regarding inmate self-help group activities; principles and techniques of group sponsorship; methods used in supervising inmates; employment conditions in a voluntary additional assignment. Ability to: Work with and inspire the cooperation of inmates; supervise group activities; promote socially acceptable attitudes and behavior.
