SPEC: AUDIOLOGIST LICENSE APPLICANT CALIFORNIA STATE PERSONNEL BOARD SPECIFICATION Schematic Code: TR49 Class Code: 8301 Established: 1/30/80 Revised: -- Title Changed: -- AUDIOLOGIST LICENSE APPLICANT DEFINITION Under the direct supervision of a licensed audiologist, administer specialized measuring devices and tests to the developmentally disabled and mentally disabled for the purpose of identifying hearing impairment and interpret and evaluate the results; provide appropriate rehabilitative services; give training in audiological treatment to parents and employees; participate in research and the development of new diagnostic and treatment techniques; and do other duties as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is an entrance classification in the Audiologist series. Incumbents must have an approved application for licensing as an audiologist on file with the California Board of Medical Quality Assurance. All positions in the class are established for a period not to exceed nine months and all appointments are made on a temporary basis. Incumbents are prelicensed audiologists completing their Required Professional Experience (RPE). Licensed audiologists are appointed to the classes of Audiologist I and Audiologist II. TYPICAL TASKS Under the direction of a licensed audiologist, incumbents administer diagnostic tests to determine the nature and extent of hearing disorders; provide individual and group aural rehabilitation and listening skill development services; prepare reports and summaries on diagnosis, prognosis, progress, and recommendations for assigned cases; confer with teachers, parents, and employees regarding progress and treatment; train parents and ward or unit employees in therapeutic procedures and methods of motivating residents related to aural rehabilitation; coordinate therapy with other treatment personnel; attend clinics and keep notes; participate in research projects. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS An application for licensure as an audiologist approved by the Speech Pathology and Audiology Examining Committee of the California Board of Medical Quality Assurance. (Includes possession of a Master's Degree in Audiology or deemed equivalent as defined by the Speech Pathology and Audiology Examining Committee.) (Applicants who meet the requirements for eligibility to file an application for licensure may apply, but they may not be appointed until their application for licensure as an audiologist has been approved by the Speech Pathology and Audiology Examining Committee.) KNOWLEDGES AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: Principles and practices of audiological therapy treatment; diagnostic and measurement techniques applicable to the evaluation of hearing disorders; physical, physiological, psychological basis of speech impairment; principles of psychology and teaching; child growth and development of children with speech defects; non-oral communication systems such as sign language. Ability to: Administer various types of diagnostic instruments measuring the degree and nature of hearing impairment; assess results; adapt remedial aural techniques to meet the needs of the developmentally disabled and mentally disabled; develop and maintain effective working relationships with other professionals, institutional staff and residents; instruct others in audiological evaluation and treatment techniques.
