DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The class of Animal Technician I is primarily a training class. Assignments involve elementary animal care accompanied with observation, study, and training. TYPICAL TASKS Performs routine feeding and watering of laboratory animals; cleans animal cages and equipment; applies basic principles of sanitation and disinfection; prepares reports and animal identification records; observes and learns to test for normal health behavior in laboratory animals; learns basic systems of biology, including structure and function of organ systems, sexing of animals, gestation periods, weaning ages; and keeps animal resource facilities clean and in accord with approved procedures. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: Basic record-keeping methods. Ability to: Follow written directions, perform simple mathematical computation; learn methods of animal care; learn basic principles of sanitation, disinfection, and personal hygiene. Capacity to learn and follow strict procedures in accord with advanced laboratory methods.
