SPEC: COMPUTER EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN CALIFORNIA STATE PERSONNEL BOARD SPECIFICATION SCOPE This class series describes four classes concerned with the installation, servicing, diagnosing of problems and maintenance of computer terminal equipment. Schem Class Code Code Class QH98 6792 Computer Equipment Technician Trainee QH97 6793 Computer Equipment Technician QH96 6794 Senior Computer Equipment Technician QH95 6795 Computer Equipment Technician Supervisor DEFINITION OF SERIES The Computer Equipment Technician series describe work involving the cleaning, adjusting, oiling, diagnosing of problems, repairing and installation of computer communication equipment such as modems, diagnostic units, multiple access units, cathode ray tube (CRT) terminals and printers, and the assembling of custom cables for this equipment. FACTORS AFFECTING POSITION ALLOCATION Supervision received, variety and complexity of computer communication equipment, latitude for independent judgment and action, responsibility for decisions; geographic area responsibility; degree of administrative responsibility. DEFINITION OF LEVELS COMPUTER EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN TRAINEE This is the entry level of the series. Under close supervision, Computer Equipment Technician Trainees learn computer communication equipment maintenance techniques and procedures including appropriate care and caution when exposed to electrical and electronic devices. Trainees learn the operation of all assigned equipment and assist higher level technicians in the cleaning, servicing, repairing, testing and installing of computer communication equipment. After a period of training, incumbents perform routine cleaning and servicing on the equipment. Positions in this class are not supervisory. COMPUTER EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN This is the full working level. Computer Equipment Technicians perform complete preventive maintenance, install new equipment, assemble custom cabling and repair malfunctioning electro-mechanic and electronic computer communication equipment of average difficulty. Positions in this class are not supervisory. SENIOR COMPUTER EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN This is the fully qualified working lead level in the series. Incumbents will be responsible for performing the most complex mechanical, electrical, and electronic maintenance on computer communication equipment and have lead responsibility in an areas subshop working with a staff engaged in computer communication equipment service. Positions in this class are not supervisory. COMPUTER EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN SUPERVISOR This is the first full supervisory level in the series. Incumbents plan, organize and direct the activities of the unit. Positions in this class are supervisory. Incumbents perform duties which are substantially different from those of subordinates, and have the authority, in the interest of management, to: hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, or discipline other employees, or responsibly direct them, or adjust their grievances, or effectively to recommend such actions. The intent is to exclude leadpersons. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS COMPUTER EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN TRAINEE Either I Successful completion of a basic electronics course. Or II One year of experience in the operation of electronic equipment, including normal maintenance performed by technicians in the trade. COMPUTER EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN Either I One year of experience performing the duties of a Computer Equipment Technician Trainee in the California state service. Or II Two years of experience in the maintenance and repair of electronic equipment. SENIOR COMPUTER EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN Either I One year of experience performing the duties of a Computer Equipment Technician in the California state service Or II Three years of experience in the maintenance and repair of electronic equipment, at least two years of which shall have been in the more complex electronic equipment area. COMPUTER EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN SUPERVISOR Either I One year of experience performing the duties of a Senior Computer Equipment Technician in the California state service. Or II Two years of experience performing the duties of a Computer Equipment Technician in the California state service. Or III Four years of experience in the maintenance and repair of electronic equipment, at least two years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity over skilled technicians engaged in the maintenance and repair of electronic equipment. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES COMPUTER EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN TRAINEE Knowledge of: Mechanical functions, basic electronics, and tools used in maintenance and making simple repairs to computer communication equipment. Ability to: Read, write, follow directions and learn and progress in the knowledge required for Computer Equipment Technician classes. COMPUTER EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN Knowledge of: All of the above, and methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and operation of computer communication equipment. Ability to: All of the above, and read, understand and interpret information from technical manuals and electronic schematics; use precision instruments for measuring current, voltage, and resistance; calibrate and repair malfunctioning electrical equipment of a moderately complex nature and instruct others in operating, repairing and maintaining installed computer communication equipment; carry out written and oral directions, keep records and make reports of accomplished work. SENIOR COMPUTER EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN Knowledge of: All of the above, and AC-DC electronics; theory of semiconductors and other memory devices and extensive computer communication trouble shooting procedures. Ability to: All of the above, and read and decipher electrical schematic diagrams, utilize precision test equipment to repair malfunctioning equipment of the most complex nature and accept increasing responsibility. COMPUTER EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN SUPERVISOR Knowledge of: All of the above, and purchasing principles and practices, office organization and principles including storekeeping the property accounting; the department's Affirmative Action Program objectives; a manager's role in the Affirmative Action Program and the processes available to meet affirmative action objectives. Ability to: All of the above, and prepare complete and comprehensive reports, maintain accurate records, work cooperatively with persons contacted in the course of work; effectively contribute to the department's affirmative action objectives. SPECIAL PERSONAL REQUIREMENTS Normal vision or vision corrected to normal; possession of a valid California driver's license (applicants who do not possess this license will be admitted to the examination but must secure the license prior to appointment); and willingness to travel extensively.
