SPEC: DRAWBRIDGE OPERATOR CALIFORNIA STATE PERSONNEL BOARD SPECIFICATION Schematic Code: PI20 Class Code: 6358 Established: 1931 Revised: 11/16/93 Title Changed: 10/8/49 DRAWBRIDGE OPERATOR DEFINITION Under direction, to operate the machinery and equipment of a movable span bridge; and to do other related work. TYPICAL TASKS Operates and maintains the machinery used in opening and closing a movable span bridge; operates and monitors marine band radio, mobile radio and telephone; observes prescribed safety rules, regulations, and marine laws applicable to the operation of a drawbridge; operates and cares for drawbridge lights; opens and closes barrier gates and gives proper warning signals during span movements; ensures that bridge machinery and equipment are maintained in good condition; makes regular and special reports on the operation of the bridge and the condition of the equipment; performs routine housekeeping duties. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Experience: One year of experience in the operation and maintenance of electrically or mechanically operated heavy equipment. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: The rules and safety practices of the United States Department of Transportation (Coast Guard) governing the operation of movable bridges over navigable waters in the State of California; operating mechanism of movable span bridges, including the control devices of variable speed electric motors. Ability to: Learn the operation of electrically or mechanically operated equipment; learn the operation of marine band radio and mobile radio; follow directions; communicate at a level required for successful job performance; prepare clear and concise reports concerning the operation of the bridge, including the describing of accidents and unusual incidents; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action. SPECIAL PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Dependability; safety-mindedness; ability to work extended periods of time without close supervision; willingness to work overtime, and irregular hours and days; a best corrected visual acuity of 20/20 or better in at least one eye; hearing sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job. DRUG TESTING REQUIREMENT Applicants for positions in this class are required to pass a drug screening test. Testing of current employees who are applicants in an examination or who are transferring is permitted only if the person does not have a current appointment to a class for which drug testing is a requirement.
