TYPICAL TASKS Plans, organizes, and directs a large exhibit program such as a horse show or a livestock show or several smaller exhibits, such as the art, poultry, or industrial exhibits; classifies and arranges entries; determines available space and allocates it as needed; contacts cities, counties, and other interested organizations to obtain participation in exhibits; plans and secures entries in shows or exhibits from commercial and farm groups; determines premiums to be awarded, secures judges, plans method of awarding premiums and supervises distribution of premiums; designs and supervises construction of exhibits; determines arrangement of space; determines methods of handling large crowds of people through exhibits, and arranges for maintenance of exhibits and most effective use of facilities; assists in the recruiting of ushers and gatepersons; supervises ushers and gatepersons at a fair; addresses clubs and organizations; develops publicity material for various exhibits; participates in radio broadcasts; designs publicity material for various other public relations media; dictates correspondence and prepares reports. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Two years of experience in either one or a combination of the following: 1. In charge of several exhibits, programs, or functions at a fair or exposition of national or statewide scope; or 2. In publicity, writing or editing work at a professional level. (In interpreting the experience requirement a full-show period at a fair or exposition of national or statewide scope will be evaluated as equivalent to six months of experience.) (Four years of college, preferably with a major in either agriculture, business administration, journalism or art, may be substituted for not more than one year of experience.) KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: Problems and practices to be met in establishing an exhibit at a fair; mechanical principles of lighting and other equipment as needed for display purposes; principles of supervision and personnel management. Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; obtain cooperation of civic, governmental, and farm groups in participation in exhibits; select judges; design an exhibit and arrange it for display purposes; write publicity material for various advertising media and for public relations distribution; speak and write effectively; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; demonstrated supervisory ability. ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
