SPEC: PRE-REGISTERED CLINICAL DIETITIAN CALIFORNIA STATE PERSONNEL BOARD SPECIFICATION Schematic Code: DH65 Class Code: 2168 Established: 7/16/80 Revised: -- Title Changed: -- PRE-REGISTERED CLINICAL DIETITIAN DEFINITION Under direct supervision of a registered dietitian to assist in the development and implementation of nutritional care plans for clients in a State facility and to do other related work. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The classification of Pre-Licensed Clinical Dietitian is a temporary appointment classification used for recruitment of professional dietitians. All appointments in this class are made on a temporary basis and are not to exceed nine months. Incumbents, upon becoming registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association, will then become eligible for appointment to the class of Clinical Dietitian. TYPICAL TASKS Assists in planning regular and special therapeutic diets for facility residents; gathers information on resident's nutritional history and assesses nutritional needs; documents and records individual nutritional needs of residents; interprets prescription for special diets; and assists in establishing recipes for use by food production personnel. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education: Equivalent to graduation from college with a major in dietetics or institutional management from a coordinated undergraduate dietetic program or a formalized post baccalaureate education program approved by the American Dietetic Association and eligibility for registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: Principles, practices and theories of nutrition and dietetics; methods of planning, preparing, and serving food to a large number of persons; special dietary requirements of mentally or developmentally disabled persons, and other client groups. Ability to: Apply the principles and practices of nutrition and dietetics; explain dietetic requirements to clients, staff, and others; keep records and prepare reports; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action. SPECIAL PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Sympathetic understanding of and willingness to work with the resident population of a State institution; personal cleanliness; good sense of smell and taste; and freedom from communicable diseases.
