SPEC: AGRICULTURAL SURVEY INTERVIEWER CALIFORNIA STATE PERSONNEL BOARD SPECIFICATION AGRICULTURAL SURVEY INTERVIEWER Series Specification (Established September 18, 1975) SCOPE This series specification describes three Agricultural Survey Interviewer classes used in the Department of Food and Agriculture. Schem Class Code Code Class AS70 0242 Agricultural Survey Interviewer I AS60 0241 Agricultural Survey Interviewer II AS50 0239 Agricultural Survey Interviewer III DEFINITION OF SERIES The Agricultural Survey Interviewer series describes positions involved in the gathering of agricultural statistics and information by personal interview or numeric count. Supervisory positions in this series, under direction, act as either a leader of and work with a small crew; or supervise agricultural survey crews engaged in obtaining data on crop production, acreages and varieties in one or more counties. JOB CHARACTERISTICS Employment in these classes is seasonal and intermittent. In no case will it extend more than nine months in any twelve month period. FACTORS AFFECTING POSITION ALLOCATION Degree of training and qualification to perform full range of duties; level, variety, complexity of work; nature of public contact; supervision exercised and received; latitude for independent judgment and action; responsibility for decision; and area geographic responsibility. DEFINITION OF LEVELS AGRICULTURAL SURVEY INTERVIEWER I Under supervision, obtains survey data by direct canvass of producers, processors or handlers of agricultural commodities or by inspection and numerical count; identifies and records tree and vine varieties; completes questionnaires, survey forms and plot plans; codes, checks, and reviews information; makes reports; and may assist in compiling data. AGRICULTURAL SURVEY INTERVIEWER II Supervises and works with a small crew engaged in the above described work; assigns canvass areas and checks, reviews, and codes interview forms and other data; keeps time and production records; compiles data, and prepares reports as required. AGRICULTURAL SURVEY INTERVIEWER III Trains and assigns groups of Agricultural Survey Interviewers assigned to canvass agricultural producers, processors or handlers; supervises Agricultural Survey Interviewers II acting as crew leaders; maintains discipline; evaluates performance; plans work schedules; reviews and codes interview forms and other data; reviews time and production records; compiles data; prepares reports; cooperates with county agricultural commissioners, property owners and Federal and State officials. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AGRICULTURAL SURVEY INTERVIEWER I Either I Experience: One season (approximately three months) of experience in growing, harvesting, grading, packing, sorting, loading, buying, selling, or inspecting fruits, vegetables, or other agricultural commodities. (Completion of a one-semester college course in one or more agricultural subjects may be substituted for the required experience.) Or II One year of responsible experience in the objective recording and collection of data. This experience can be gained in a variety of settings including storeroom and inventory, clerical, or surveying and polltaking. AGRICULTURAL SURVEY INTERVIEWER II Either I Experience: Two seasons (approximately six months) of experience in growing, harvesting, grading, packing, sorting, loading, buying, selling, or inspecting fruits, vegetables, or other agricultural commodities, or in virus or pest control work or in agricultural survey work. (Completion of a one-year college course in one or more agricultural subjects may be substituted for the required experience.) Or II Two years of responsible experience in the objective recording and collection of data. This experience can be gained in a variety of settings including storeroom and inventory, clerical, or surveying and polltaking. AGRICULTURAL SURVEY INTERVIEWER III Either I 1. Two seasons (approximately six months) of agricultural survey work. or 2. Twelve months of experience in inspection, grading or quality determination of fruits and vegetables. (Completion of a two-year college course in one or more agricultural subjects may be substituted for a maximum of one season of experience under Pattern 1 or six months of experience under Pattern 2.) Or II Three years of responsible experience in the objective recording and collection of data. This experience can be gained in a variety of settings including storeroom and inventory, clerical, or surveying and polltaking. At least six months of this experience shall have been in a supervisory capacity. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES AGRICULTURAL SURVEY INTERVIEWER I Ability to: Accurately secure and record information; follow oral and written directions; do simple arithmetical calculations; write legibly, prepare clear and accurate reports; secure and maintain the cooperation of persons contacted in the work; and identify tree and vine varieties. AGRICULTURAL SURVEY INTERVIEWER II Ability to: All of the above, and instruct others in the methods of gathering and compiling survey data; and read maps and plans to become quickly orientated in new geographic settings; effectively contribute to the Department's affirmative action objectives. AGRICULTURAL SURVEY INTERVIEWER III Knowledge of: Methods of gathering and compiling survey data; Department's Affirmative Action Program objectives; a manager's role in the Affirmative Action Program and the processes available to meet affirmative action objectives. Ability to: All of the above, and maintain discipline and direct work assignments over a wide area; effectively contribute to the Department's affirmative action objectives. SPECIAL PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS ALL LEVELS: Willingness to work at irregular hours; willingness to travel throughout the State; impartiality, tact, pleasing personality, and neat personal appearance. SPECIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS ALL LEVELS: Ability and willingness to walk long distances.
