WELLNESS MODEL PROJECT - CALIFORNIA WORKSWELL 1996/97The Committee is also providing staff support for the implementation of a wellness model project (California WorksWell) to promote work site wellness. The project is scheduled to begin in January 1997. The participating agencies are: the Department of Personnel Administration, the Public Employees' Retirement System, the California Highway Patrol, the Department of Transportation, the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Department of Health Services, the Resources Agency, and the State Compensation Insurance Fund. For the model project, the site location will be at specified Sacramento office locations only to ensure ease of delivery during the model period. All employees at the sites will be encouraged to participate on a voluntary basis. The wellness activities will include health risk appraisals, health screenings (blood pressure and cholesterol), a health newsletter, walking clubs, fitness events, brown bag seminars, and program evaluation measures. A nutrition component will include providing healthy low-fat meal options through education and cooking demonstrations as well as working with the Department of Rehabilitation Business Exchange Program vendors in charge of the cafeterias at those sites. Each employee at the model sites will be asked to complete a food choice survey to help the model project provide better service. It is anticipated that the health plans will be able to provide the health screenings, materials for a lending library, and a pool of mentors who would be available to the eight model site coordinators for advice and consultation. The successful implementation of the project can serve as a catalyst to provide and expand work site wellness programs to the entire State employee population. |
