PURPOSE OF THE GUIDE

This Guide to Develop and Implement a Work Site Health Promotion Program has been developed by the Department of Personnel Administration (DPA) and the Statewide Wellness Steering Committee to assist wellness coordinators develop and implement a comprehensive Work Site Health Promotion Program. It covers the benefits of implementing work site wellness programs and gives background information on the various initiatives within State government to implement wellness programs at the work site.

It also provides departmental coordinators with a step-by-step approach to planning, designing, implementing and evaluating a program. This includes the preliminary steps necessary for planning the program such as:

  • gaining management's support,
  • forming an advisory committee,
  • conducting employee interest surveys and needs assessments, and,
  • determining available resources.
In addition, it covers the risk factors that affect an employee's health that can be modified through various interventions. It provides a comprehensive discussion of these interventions and specific activities and programs that can be implemented at the work site. Various stages of lifestyle or behavior modification are discussed and suggestions made on steps to provide support and motivation to the employee. It also covers the importance of evaluating the effectiveness of your program and the types of evaluations that can be conducted.

This guide will orient departmental coordinators to the health plan providers and other agencies that are available in the local community that can serve as a resource. A bibliography of wellness related literature and educational material is included.
