Executive Order W-119-95, signed on April 4, 1995, recognizes the physical and mental well being of the State work force can be improved through worksite health promotion in areas such as preventive medicine, exercise, diet, stress management, smoking cessation, drug and alcohol avoidance, and accident prevention. The Order acknowledges that a healthier work force can result in higher quality work, improved morale and productivity, reduced absenteeism, and lower health care and workers' compensation costs.
The Department of Personnel Administration (DPA) serves as the central clearinghouse of health and fitness promotion and illness prevention information for State of California wellness coordinators. The scope of this includes, but is not limited to, employee awareness campaigns, health risk appraisals, health screenings, illness and injury prevention training programs, exercise programs and special communication and education activities.
The Executive Order directed each State department to dedicate resources to coordinate their participation in the California WorksWell Health Promotion Program or arrange to cooperate with other departments in their agency or geographic proximity for program coordination.
