Staff Reductions and Layoff

• Notice requirements

A department that plans to lay off employees must provide written notice to the affected unions 30-60 days (depending on bargaining unit) prior to the effective date of the layoff. (Consult the bargaining unit contracts for specific time requirements.)

If you're to be laid off, or demoted in lieu of layoff, your employer must give you at least 30 days notice prior to the effective date of your termination or demotion. The notice must be in writing.

If you’re transferred, but the transfer does not require you to change residence, you also must be given at least 30 days notice, in writing. If your transfer to a new location will require you to change residence, your employer must give you at least 60 days notice, in writing. During this 30- or 60-day notice period, you may be required to report to the new work site under a temporary assignment.

Your written notice will describe any options your employer can offer, such as positions you may demote or transfer to based on your seniority.
